Juniors (8th-12th Grade)

The Westerville Crew Juniors Team is a competitive rowing team for youth athletes in grades 8th - 12th. The program consists of intensive physical indoor and outdoor practice. The team primarily competes in sweep rowing events (one oar per rower) but also fields boats in sculling (two oars per rower) when the opportunity presents itself. Competitive big boat rowing enables hardworking athletes to develop into successful individuals both on and off the water. The special nature of rowing, where athletes must work together in order to achieve success, enables the formation of strong bonds between team members not typically seen in other team or individual sports. Coaches set high expectations of members of the competitive team in athletics, academics, and attitude.

Competitive high school rowers (juniors) can start at any experience level. Regardless of when they start, after a year of novice rowing all high school rowers are considered varsity.  High school rowers, made up of all-girl or all-boy crews of 8 plus a coxswain, train 6 days a week in winter and in spring and fall regatta seasons. All high school rowers compete in USRowing-sanctioned events held at local and regional regattas, while varsity also competes nationally.

Being a club sport, any rower from Central Ohio is welcome to participate - we serve students in every school district, parochial,  private or home school.  Our central location attracts student athletes from a diverse listing of school districts including New Albany, Columbus Academy, Westerville, Gahanna, Pickerington, Worthington, Olentangy, Big Walnut, and many others. Any student is welcome to come and give rowing a try.

All of our coaching staff strive to provide a world class rowing experience for our athletes. Most of the coaches are former collegiate athletes, having  decades of experience in the sport. We hope you take the opportunity to come give rowing a try by stopping by at a practice session or registering to participate.
