What do you get with
eighty-five men’s football scholarships?
A lot of opportunities for women.
That opportunity today is
coming in the form of women’s rowing,
one of the hottest new scholarship sports on college campuses. More than 128 colleges and universities are fielding women’s
rowing teams, schools like the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, the University of California at Berkeley, Princeton, Harvard,
Wisconsin, and a host of others.
The NCAA allows up to twenty
scholarships for any women’s sport.
But because women’s rowing is an emerging sport, high school
rowers are often few and far between.
Some women are not being recruited until after their arrival on
college campuses.
For women still in high
school, though, a real opportunity exists.
With competition for scholarships less intense than perhaps in
other sports, and interest among colleges high, some might be able to
improve their chances for admission and financial aid.
